About the role

Mercor partners with leading AI labs and enterprises to train frontier models using human expertise. This fully remote, hourly contractor role focuses on scientific data analysis in bioinformatics.

What you'll do

• Complete realistic, multi-step scientific data-analysis tasks in bioinformatics.
• Write original bioinformatics questions with exact, objective answers.
• Choose and anonymize data from public archives such as GEO, SRA/ENA, ArrayExpress, PRIDE, PDB, and MGnify, or from unpublished lab data you have the right to share.
• Use scientific software, code, and command-line tools to produce reproducible analyses and structured final outputs.
• Develop a Jupyter validation notebook in Python or R that reproduces the correct answer.
• Interpret results in their biological or translational context, clearly explaining assumptions, uncertainty, and conclusions.

Who we're looking for

• Master's or PhD, or equivalent research experience, in bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics, statistical genetics, quantitative biology, or a closely related field.
• Hands-on sequencing and omics analysis experience, from raw reads to interpretation: bulk or single-cell RNA-seq, WGS/WES, variant calling, metagenomics, proteomics, or similar.
• Experience with one or more of samtools, bcftools, bedtools, BWA, Bowtie2, BLAST, Python libraries such as pandas, Biopython, and pysam, or R/Bioconductor tools such as DESeq2, edgeR, limma, and GenomicRanges.
• Ability to write and run Jupyter notebooks that reproduce your work exactly.
• Clear, precise scientific writing.
• Access to unpublished or private datasets you have the right to share is a strong plus.
• Deep knowledge of a niche area, such as a non-model organism, unusual assay, or specialized genomic interpretation, is a strong plus.

Compensation and contract terms

• $90–$110 per hour.
• Independent contractor; fully remote, on your own schedule.
• Weekly payments through Stripe or Wise based on services rendered.
• Projects may be extended, shortened, or concluded early depending on needs and performance.
• Work must not involve access to confidential or proprietary information belonging to any employer, client, or institution.
